Rowan Williams is an intelligent, devout and well-intentioned man. But he has done, and will continue to do, great harm to his church and, therefore, to his country. He has turned out to be the living embodiment of the Episcopal ghost in Lewis’s The Great Divorce. Williams has lost his grip on both truth and intellectual virtue. Prudence eludes him. For those who hate historic Christian orthodoxy and traditional morality — and who seek to undermine them — he is their dream come true.
Christ told us to be as wise as serpents and as harmless as doves. Those two things go intimately together: If you are not wise, you cannot be harmless. Williams is not wise, and as a result has does great harm. Short of something miraculous, that he is the Abp. of Canterbury can only be lamentable.
