Bridges’ Respectable Sins

Just a brief plug for Jerry Bridges’ wonderful* little book, Respectable Sins : Confronting the Sins we Tolerate. I’ve been a thankful fan of Jerry Bridges since I first read his excellent The Pursuit of Holiness and The Practice of Godliness back around 1997. Both are excellent devotional-type books, great for a chapter-a-day reading (though each chapter probably ought to be poured over for at least a few days each). Respectable Sins follows suit – a chapter can easily be read in about 15-20 minutes, but really ought to be prayed over and meditated on for days or even weeks.

Here are the topics he covers with what JI Packer calls “a gentle surgeon’s sharp knife”:

  • Ungodliness
  • Anxiety and Frustration
  • Discontentment
  • Unthankfulness
  • Pride
  • Selfishness
  • Lack of Self-Control
  • Impatience and Irritability
  • Anger
  • The Weeds of Anger
  • Judgmentalism
  • Envy, Jealousy, and Related Sins
  • Sins of the Tongue
  • Worldliness

As you can see, there’s something in here for everyone…

(Chapter 1 can be read for free here.)

* “wonderful” as in, terribly convicting and lovingly exhortational.
