Pride and Prettiness

This will be the first wedding I’ve ever attended with another person.

But on the phone with her just now I said something very supercilious in reference to [removed].

I am not prideful “to the core;” I am prideful from it.

And the fact that I’m proud of being so clever as to think this up is proof that the statement is true. There is even pride in abhoring one’s own pride…

That reminds me of a message I heard Piper preach (I’m sure you’ve heard it) where he reminded us ‘ do not be arrogant in your despair’. I thought about that for a long time…I remembered Romans 8:39 [show] [39]nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. says nothing can ever separate us from the love of Christ, external or internal, and that means my sin, my pride, my arrogance, my humanity, and my own filth.

Once the doctrine of election breaks into the mind, it can be a pretty exciting discovery. But, when it ‘spills’ from the academic realm into the personal and devotional, it can become terribly frightening.

At that point, I think the best remedy is to focus on promises such as “all who believe shall be saved–” period; end of story. No more questions, just believe (and keep believing).

When Bunyan despaired over his own election, he said he found much comfort in “that blessed sixth of John.” Thank God his election is without condition…!
